Medical practitioners use a whole lot of things to determine the state of our health – and semen is just one of them. Apparently, the traits of your semen, namely the appearance, the smell and the taste, speak volumes as far as your health is concerned. If either of these characteristics goes against the norm, it is an indication that something is up.

So, how do you know that your semen is normal?

As already stated, normal semen has particular characteristics divided into the look, volume, taste and smell and so on and so forth.

Your semen is normal if it exhibits a cloudy white or grayish appearance. Its consistency should be jelly-like – thick and viscous. If left in the open, healthy semen is expected first to clot or coagulate and then liquefy. This means that semen that takes another color, say yellowish or red, is not healthy.

However, yellow semen is not always an indication of a health problem. One of the causes of yellow traces on semen is leaked urine from the urethra. If you have stayed for a long time without ejaculating, your semen could also be yellow once you do. The shade of the semen may also change over time as a man ages. Jaundice and Leukocytospermia are also sometimes to blame for yellow semen.

Blood in the semen, also known as hematospermia should be a cause for alarm especially if you are aged above 40. However, if you are 40 years and below and haven’t observed other abnormal symptoms, the blood strikes in your semen may go away on its own. You should get concerned if the red semen has been recurring or if you think you are a risk of suffering cancer. Some of the most common causes of blood in semen include:

  • Infection or inflammation of the glands, tubes, and ducts used in the generation and transportation of semen. It could be the urethra, epididymis and vas deferens, and the seminal vesicles.
  • Viral and bacterial infections
  • Trauma following a medical procedure such as prostate biopsy, vasectomy, injections of hemorrhoids and radiation therapy.
  • Physical trauma due to rigorous sexual intercourse

Normal semen volume ranges between two and three milliliters or more. Usually, 10 percent of your ejaculate is sperm. Unless your semen volume is extremely low, there is no cause for worry. The semen volume does not affect your fertility and is not a measure of your sperm count. Someone could have low semen volume but have sufficiently good measures of sperm count.

Smell, taste, and ph of semen

The usual semen has a fishy odor or chlorine semen. Irrespective of the apparently yucky smell, semen is slightly sweet, and this is attributed to the high content of fructose. However, semen taste may change between individuals largely due to diet differences. Healthy semen has a pH range of 7.2-7.8 – same as the standard pH of the body. If it goes below 7.2, it might mean two things; possible malformations of the reproductive tract and low sperm count. On the other hand, if it exceeds 7.8, you could be looking at a potential urinary tract infection.
